Case Study: Strategic Assessment for TEXO

October 24, 2019

|

TEXO is a combined chapter of the two largest national construction associations in the country (Associated Builders and Contractors and The Associated General Contractors of America).

In the North Texas area, they now represent roughly 4 out of 5 contractors, a vibrant community considering the booming DFW market for construction.

Just like the construction industry they represent, TEXO has gone through drastic changes in the last 5 years and they found themselves totally reinventing the value they offered to their members. Internal flux (CEO changes and staff turnover) created a culture shift organizationally and they were behind in nearly every area of technology.

What TEXO found was not uncommon in association world – there was an out-of-date infrastructure, lack of staff training in key software, and concerns about how clean and correct the data was.

enSYNC's Strategic Assessment

The decision was made to undergo a Strategic Assessment, to map the goals of the organization with the technology and processes needed to get there. enSYNC was called in to perform the assessment.

In reviewing where TEXO stood, Tanessa Busch, who oversees the membership services area, said “Technology was not a priority at all. We found we were using about 5% of what our database software could do. Manual processes were the standard, so there were a lot of duplicate efforts and so much inefficiency!” In kudos to TEXO, Tanessa adds that the association has always maintained a consistent and focused vision on what the members want. “Our board is awesome that way!”

enSYNC's Next Action

enSYNC came onsite and met with staff for two days to document the processes, the pain points, and most importantly, the goals and objectives of the organization. Where did they want to go? Using that assessment, enSYNC and TEXO worked together to map out how iMIS 20 (a version far beyond what they had been using in their organization) could accomplish all of their goals.

Technology-wise, iMIS was still relevant, but that was only part of what the Strategic Assessment uncovered.

“I really believe that this assessment helped solidify our new office culture of working together vs working in silos and not collaboratively.”

She said they discussed what each staff member did and their “hope and dreams” and opportunities of what they would like to do in order to actualize the goal of serving the member. “It really brought everyone together and I think made everyone realize that we had a fresh opportunity to raise the bar of what we were doing for our members.”
